Boston Red Sox outfielder David Murphy has exercised an opt-out clause in his contract, forcing the team to place him on its 40-man roster or release him by Tuesday. Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reported the news. Murphy, 34, signed a one-year contract with the Red Sox that is worth $2 million if he makes the major league roster.
